The Feminist Rhythm

1/9/2016

Dear rasikas

Our 2016 Fundraising Campaign is well under way and has reached 10% of the goal, thanks to those of you who acted promptly.

It is had to believe that Carnatic music was once considered a man's world. There were hardly any vocalists or accompanists, much less percussionists, of the fairer gender until the arrival of the triumvirate of M.S. Subbulakshmi, D.K. PaTTammaL, and M.L. Vasanthakumari pioneered a revolution of sorts. Today, Carnatic music has been enriched and embellished by many famous woman vocalists who have earned the respect and admiration of their male peers and the discerning audience. However, there continues to be at least one accompaniment that is still considered a male bastion - the mridangam. To this day, it is a rare opportunity to witness a female mridangist holding her own in a Carnatic music concert, even in India.

That is why Hamsadhwani is proud and honored to present two wonderful and refreshingly talented musicians in 2016 - Shubha Chandramouli and Rajna Swaminathan. Just watch them perform, and you will see why they are every bit as worthy of such lofty expectations and high praise as any other exponent of the art that they have mastered.

Here is your chance to encourage such young artistes who are proudly carrying the flag of history and hopefully passing it to the next generation. Support Hamsadhwani's endeavors by making a donation today. For your convenience, donations can be sent online or via mail, if not in person.

Thank You

" Hamsa(swan) is the bird which brought king Nala and princess Damayanthi together. Now Hamsadwani is bringing Rasikas of music and young artists together to render a great service. The young artists are already becoming famous. Wish the organization all the best for continuing this valuable service."
