WOMEN IN THE WORLD OF PERCUSSION

2/6/2018

Picture
It is had to believe that Carnatic music was once considered a man's world. There were hardly any vocalists or accompanists, much less percussionists, of the fairer gender until the arrival of the triumvirate of M.S. Subbulakshmi, D.K. PaTTammaL, and M.L. Vasanthakumari pioneered a revolution of sorts. Today, Carnatic music has been enriched and embellished by many famous woman vocalists who have earned the respect and admiration of their male peers and the discerning audience. However, there continues to be at least one accompaniment that is still considered a male bastion - the mridangam. To this day, it is a rare opportunity to witness a female mridangist holding her own in a Carnatic music concert, even in India.

That is why Hamsadhwani is proud and honored to present  wonderful and refreshingly talented musician in 2018 - Shubha Chandramouli . Here is your chance to encourage such young artistes who are proudly carrying the flag of history and passing it to the next generation.

Shubha Chandramouli, a disciple of Sri. Poovalur Srinivasan, is an upcoming young artist in the field of Carnatic music, following in the grand lineage of the legendary Sri. Pazhani Subramania Pillai, Mylatoor Sami Iyer, and P.A. Venkataraman. Shubha has accompanied several renowned musicians around the US, Canada, and India. Shubha is a regular performer in Chennai during the December music season, and also has performed several times at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana.

Shubha has been trained in vocal Carnatic music, initially from her mother Sunanda Chandramouli, and is currently training under Smt. Geetha Ramanathan Bennett and Sri. Delhi P. Sunderrajan. She has given several vocal concerts around the US and India as well. An MBA graduate from Boston University, Shubha is currently working at Ernst & Young as a Consultant.

" Hamsa(swan) is the bird which brought king Nala and princess Damayanthi together. Now Hamsadwani is bringing Rasikas of music and young artists together to render a great service. The young artists are already becoming famous. Wish the organization all the best for continuing this valuable service."
