Singing helps me in school and dance. When you sing you need to concentrate and be still and in school you need to do the same two things to succeed. While dancing and singing you need to know the beats of when to start and the pauses between the song. Listening and singing to Carnatic music is my internal escape to the outside world. Through music I have learned to control my emotions and calm myself down. Carnatic music will only impact your life in a good way.
Right from the beginning, Carnatic music has impacted my life in various ways. For example, while singing I can express myself in many different manners. Singing and listening to these beautiful Carnatic songs make me lose myself internally. Any time I am having a bad day, just sitting down and singing helps me make it a good day.

I feel relaxed when I listen to beautiful songs. I enjoy playing those songs on keyboard on my own. Tabala, Keyboard, Violin all are my favorite instruments. I like to know all the Ragams and Thalams. These days, I spend most of my time in learning and practicing songs. I do have stage fear and want to attend as much as sessions/ concerts, so that I can overcome this fear. I feel very happy to see people performing on stages. Watching these concerts creates a confidence in me. I want to learn more and start performing on stages without fear. I am waiting for the day, when I would accompany a vocal artist with my violin performance! Overall, Music makes me happy. -AKSHAY RAMACHANDRAN How does listening to Carnatic music help improve your music skills? Listening to Carnatic music improves your music skills by helping you understand and identify many different ragams. Each ragam has its own unique pattern. You can only associate and identify these patterns if you regularly listen to Carnatic music. Some ragams are more complicated than others. As an example, ragam Bangaala has a more complicated avarohanam than Mohanam. You can understand and enjoy these ragams only if you can identify them. That happens only if you listen to more Carnatic music. Also, listening to music can inspire you, as it did to me. You can get inspired from other people’s way of alapanai, or you can get your own style for sangathees. This helps improve our music skills. -Gokul Sriram When you're asked to attend a live concert, what is your response? Do I really have to go? Or trying to convince your parents not to go? That could be the case for almost all kids. When you are young, you may not notice the importance of attending live concerts. It's important to go to them because you learn many things by just listening. When you listen, you learn. How? Well, first, you won't know the tune to a ragam just by reading the name. You must listen to the song that the singer is singing. This way, when you learn a new song in that ragam, you'll be familiar with the ragam and might sing it even better. You can also interact with the singers and even ask questions afterwards. First when you go, you might want to leave in half an hour. Try to pace yourself. On the 1st concert, stay for 1 hour. On the 2nd, stay for 1 and a half hours, and so on. This way, you will slowly stay for 3 hours. As you can see, live concerts are important because when you listen, you learn. -DHIVYA BHATHE People know that singers start to learn Carnatic Music at a very young age, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they like it at that age. I, myself, have been one of those kids that get upset when they don’t get it right. Now, as I proceed through the years, I have started to enjoy singing and listening to music. In my second grade, I turned in an expository school project called “How Music Affects Your Brain”. Have you ever imagined, why music, more than any other form of art brings out emotions from you? The more I read about music, the more inspired I became. After my project, I chose to just keep trying. I attended Hamsadhwani performances and concerts. I sang on the stage. I also sang to my relatives. Occasionally, my mom’s friends or coworkers came over and I would sing for them too. They all supported and encouraged me. I remember reading this somewhere - when you are constantly exposed to a good form of art, you can never become a bad person even if you try very hard. I do believe that music makes me a better kid. I have patience towards my friends, parents, and kids younger than me. Now, I feel like music is part of my identity. I feel like it is a privilege to have music as part of my identity. I hope that I can be able to sustain that for a very long time. -JEYANI SRINIVASAN |
